2010-04-29 偏差値至上主義者

小学生の3年の頃だったと思います。

私が国語で66点の点数を取って帰って来た時、母親に凄まじい勢いで叱られ、玄関の外に引きずり出されたことがあります。

平均点という観念がなかった私の母親は、『テストというものは、大体80点位で、よく勉強すれば100点を取れるもの』という前提(というか思い込み)があったのだと思います。

66点は、クラスの最高点でした。

子供心に「無知は迷惑」と思ったものです。

私達が、義務教育課程にあったころ(多分今でもそうだと思うが)偏差値教育批判がありました。

私は、一貫して、

『何をバカなことを言っていやがる』

と思ってきましたし、これからもこの考えは変えないと思います。

偏差値くらい物事の正確に把握させてくれる道具はありませんし、これほどに公平な指標はないのではないかと思います。

「偏差値」を非難する人は、人生で一度も偏差値を理解しようとしたことがなく、たった一度の計算もやったことがないのではないかと疑っています。

偏差値を非難する人は、クラス40人のなかで100点が35人いる場合の95点を取ることと、50点が35人いる場合の95点の優劣も区別できていないのではないかと邪推しています。

なるほど平均点が違うので、後者の95点の方が価値があるとは判ります。

では、一つの例を。

クラス10人で2つのテストを行いました。

これをテストAとテストBといいます。

テストAの結果は、52、44、65、86、19、39、89、79、36、91点となり、

テストBの結果は、51、43、65、76、53、59、65、59、58、71点となりました。

テストAで65点とった人と、テストBで65点を取った人は、どっちが優秀でしょうか。

ちなみにどちらも平均点は60点になります。

これを、『平均値が同じだから両方の65点は同じ価値だ』とか言う阿呆がいるから、偏差値が必要なんです。

詳しいことは割愛しますが、テストAの偏差(ばらつき)は約25点で、テストBは9点です。

テストBの方の65点が圧倒的に優秀であることは・・

え?・・、分からない?

じゃあ、

57、58、59、60、61、62、63、64、65、66点の中の65点と

10、20、30、40、50、60、70、80、90、100点中の65点

なら判りますか。

上の列の65点はトップクラスになりますが、下の列の65点は、平均<よりちょっと良いくらいの成績です。

偏差値とは、母集団の性質を反映した上で正しい結果を教えてくれる、人類が生み出した至宝の計算方式です。

偏差値の凄い所は、時間的にも普遍性を持っている点です。

「偏差値60の学校」という言い方は、その入学の難しさ語るにおいて100年後であっても同じように使えるという点にあります。

その時代の教育水準や環境によって、母集団の傾向が変動したとしても、その母集団の一人にとって、その学校に入学することの難しさは、絶対的かつ普遍的に「偏差値60の難しさ」なのです。

「個性」だの「感性」だのという指標は、個人の主観に基づく不確かな基準であり、嘘のまじる余地が満載であると思います。

しかし、偏差値の持つ「冷酷なまでの公平性」は、このような「あいまいさ」を排して、評価するという点で圧倒的に優れています。

「個性や人柄や将来可能性などの主観的な要因を徹底的に排して、ただ『学力』だけを基準とする」という潔さがあり、そこには審美性すら感じます。

偏差値が良くないというのであれば、代替の手段を提示して貰えれば良いのですが、そういうものもなく、ただ反対という点に、偏差値反対を叫ぶ人の『無知性』を感じてしまうのです。

私は大学生時代に、PC-8001Mk2というパソコンを使って、自分でプログラミングして、学習塾の生徒の成績を管理していました。 たった5人の学習塾のクラスでも、偏差値を算出していました。

# エクセルとかのスプレッドシートは、まだ存在しない時代の話です。

# まだ「ロータス1-2-3」もなかった。

稚拙とはいえ、統計計算パッケージとデータベースを自作していたのです。

あの、滅茶苦茶に記述しにくいBASIC言語で。

統計とプログラミングに興味があり、それなりに時間を自由にできた時代の話とはいえ、よくやっていたものだと思います。


2012-04-29 私の葬式には、絶対に来ないでくれ

昨日、大学のゼミの恩師の退官記念祝賀会に出席してきました。

場所は新大阪近くのホテル。出席人数200人超の大きなパーティで、先生のご人徳の賜物(たまもの)と言って良いでしょう。

しかし、当たり前ですが、関西と関東の間は、遠くて高くて時間がかかります。

大学とのコネクションを維持したい人(共同研究や依頼研究や、教授に博士論文の主査になって貰う等)は、大学の近くで就職して、居所を構えるべきだなぁ、と実感しました。

それはさておき。

先日、この「祝賀会」に関して、以下のような日記を書きました。

楽観的な気休めを言うのは、もう止めましょう。

「いつか、どこかで、また出会える」ということが「ない」ことを、私達は知っている。

これからの人生で、再会する可能性が絶無であることを知っている。

会えるとしたら、多分、どっちかの葬式だろう。

しかし、葬式では、お互いに喋れないし、笑うこともできん。

そんなもんに、私は参列しない。勿論、私の方にも来なくていい。

だから、最後にもう一度だけ、

動いていて、
喋っていて、
笑っている、

皆に会いたい。

私の人生で、苦しい時にいつでも支えてくれる、あの目も眩むような幸せな日々を一緒に作ってくれた皆に ――

―― 最後の最後に、もう一度、心からのお礼を言いたい。

てなことを書いていました。

教授が退官されることになれば、我々が結集する場は事実上無くなります。

結婚する人はもう大体結婚しているから結婚式で集まることもないだろうし、関東と関西では、個人的につきあうには距離が遠すぎる。

遠距離恋愛は、「恋愛」というファクターでギリギリコネクションを維持できる「場合」があり、多くの場合、恋愛は距離に負けます。
(それを、逆に戦略的に使うという手法もあります(今、この場で「江端メソッド」と命名)が、これは別の機会に)

ですから、このパーティの最後には、仲間が号泣するような感動的な別離シーンを予想していたのです。

私が甘かった。

私の「可愛い後輩達」は、それが、人生最後の出会いであろうが、なかろうが、相変わらず、先輩をいじって楽しむことに、何の躊躇もありませんでした。

『関東なんぞに行ってから、江端さんは変わってしまった。守りに入ってしまった江端さんに、何の価値があるんですか』

『会社に慣れない? そんなこと、最初からここにいる皆が分っていたのに、自分で理解するのに20年もかかったんですか』

『このタイミングで、舞台に乱入しないのですか? 江端さん、私はガッカリです』

いいですか。

この発言をしている彼等は、40台後半に差しかかった、全員がそれなりの社会的地位を有する、大人の男の会話であることを覚えておいて下さいね。大学生じゃないですよ。

帰りの新幹線のキップを握って会場を脱出しようとする私を、物理的に(暴力的に)取り押えて、帰宅を妨害しようとしました(20時台の新幹線に乗らないと、私は帰宅できない)。

彼等は、―― 多分、その後、彼等は私をそのまま夜の大阪の街に放置して、自分達だけは終電で帰宅する ―― そうだ、だんだん、思い出してきたぞ。彼等はそういう奴等(やつら)だった。

間違っても『江端さん、私の家に泊まって下さい』などと殊勝なことを言う奴等ではない。

『まだ夜は寒いですから気をつけて。新聞紙が暖かいらしいですよ』くらいのことは、平気で言う奴等だ。

忘れていた訳ではないのですが、彼等と私の関係は、20年以上の時を経ても、何にも変っていませんでした(もっと変わって良いと、私は思う)。

そして、彼等は、私の葬式にやって来る。

そして、その葬式の最初から最後まで、私の悪口に花を咲かせ、そして、大声で笑い続けるだろう。

そして、親族や関係者は、私を「そういう人間だったか」と誤認して、私の葬式は、ただの騒乱した宴会と化すだろう。間違いない。

嫌だ。

それだけは避けたい。

何も言えずに、棺の中で黙り続けなければならないなど ―― 想像しただけでも、耐えられない。

私は今、誇張、反語、いかなる逆説的な意味なく、心の底からお願いしたいのです。

『私の葬式には、絶対に来ないでくれ』

私の人生の最後の最後くらいは、

「私の尊厳と名誉を破壊するような行為に及ばないで欲しい」

と、今、土下座の気持ちで、お願い(懇願)に至っております。


2013-04-29 「まおゆう魔王勇者」

私には、「シュタインズゲート」を第22話まで見逃し、そして会社の上司に教えて貰うまで「まどか」を知りもしなかった、という痛恨の失敗があります。

特に、「シュタインズゲート」を知らずに、人生を終えていたらと思うと、ゾッとします。

そのような反省もあり、昨年から、とにかく、どのようなアニメであれ、偏見なく、途中からでもよいから、数分は目を通してみる、ということを自らに課しております。

私が「魔法」やら「魔王」やらを冠する題目のコンテンツを、なんとなく忌避してしまう、というお話はずいぶん前にしました。

ですから、

「まおゆう魔王勇者」

というのも、まあ、ちょっと遠慮していたのです。

しかし「まお」「ゆう」という、私の娘(長女)と私の妻の両方の名前を使った、この題目を見たとき、

―― もしかして、世界が私に「これを見ろ」と誘っているのか?

と感じまして、途中から視聴を開始しました。

最近のアニメって凄いんですね。

TPPとか欧州通貨統合の意義、そして国家的な関税戦略なども教えてくれるようになっているんですね。

その他、教育活動の本質的な目的とか、革命的技術が社会構造を変えてしまう事象なども、上手く描かれています。

-----

「まおゆう」なども含めて、私は純粋に「羨しい」と思いました。

私達の子どものころのアニメと言えば、善悪が未定義のままで展開されるヒーロ(戦隊を含む)ものとか、存在意義が不明なままの魔法使い少女とか、そういう、思考ゼロの状態でも見られるものばかりでした。

比して、今のアニメは本当に素材が豊富であると思うのです。

経済、先端科学技術、法律(警察ものを含む)、歴史を取り扱うものなど、多岐に渡り、一つ一つが大変勉強になります(勿論、難しいのですが)。

もっとも、子どもたちが、「そのような視点」で見ているかどうかは不明ではあるのですが。

しかし、少なくとも、このようなコンテンツに触れられるという環境は、教育上、大きな意義があるのではないかと感じ、やっぱり「羨しい」と思ってしまうのです。


2014-04-29 それぞれの上長は、それぞれの利益で動きます。しかも、立場の弱い新人を使ってです。

私の勤務する会社には、2年目の新人に、業務内容を報告する発表会が、「大々的」に行われます。

There is an extreme event "business presentation of trainee in two year" in my company.

この「大々的」というのが、当人は当然として、その指導員、課長、部長が総力を上げて指導に入り、発表会には所長クラスの幹部が全員ラインナップします。

This "extreme" means that instructors, managers, and general managers assist the rookies of the second year, and all of executive directors attend the event.

私の場合、この発表会の前、30回以上の原稿と、プレゼン資料の書き直しを命じられ、肉体的にも精神的にも限界でした。

In my case, I had been ordered to rewrite reports and presentation materials by them, and I have almost been broken physically and mentally.

その中でも、最低最悪なのが「指揮命令系統の不一致」です。

Among them, the worst in the lowest was an inconsistent hierarchy.

指導員、課長、部長が矛盾した命令を出し、さらに上位優先の原則を捻じ曲げる下位クラスの管理職が、「変更を許さない」等の無茶を押しつけてくることがあります。

The instructors, managers, and general managers issue the contradict order to the rookies, and parts of them tries to ignore the principle on purpose and never permit the modification.

それぞれの上長は、それぞれの利益で動きます。しかも、立場の弱い新人を使ってです。

Each supervisor acts for their merit with using week rookies.

勿論、これは企業における指揮命令系統のルール違反ですので、ラインを使って止めさせることも可能ですが、そうなると現場の人間関係は壊滅します

Of course, this is a rule violation of the company, so rookies could stop the contradict order. If they do it, the human relationships are absolutely broken, because,

―― だって、指導員や課長の顔にドロ塗ることになりますからね。

The rookies are about to daub boss’s face with mud.

2年目の新人にとって、これは勇気 ―― というより、狂気が必要となるでしょう。

The rookies take courage to do it. In fact they need madness.

加えて、幹部クラスから、本番直前に、ほぼ完成したプレゼンに対して、とんでもない横槍が入ります。

Additionally, the executive enforce them to change the concept of the almost completed presentation before a few days.

例えば、『全ての発表に「グローバル」という用語を必ず入れて、その内容に言及せよ』とか。

For example, "the term of "Global" should be added in all presentation material"

当然、発表のコンセプトはズタズタになります。現場は大混乱、新人は心身喪失状態になり、直前に病気でバタバタと倒れていきます。

Of course, the flow of presentation is going to be destroyed. Rookies become nervous and continue to fall in sick in sequence.

―― こんなイベントは、とっとと止めてしまえ

"Stop this stupid event as soon as possible!"

私は、入社以来一貫して主張してきました。

I always have been claimed to be consistent since joining company.

だいたい、これ、会社に不利益は与えていても、利益は与えていないじゃないですか(なんなら試算してみてもいい)

To begin with, this event doesn't generate merit but demerit. I had wanted to calculate it.

内側から変わらないのであれば、「株主総会」で、試算結果を暴露してやろうか、と、本気で思ったこともあります。

I used to seriously think that I was going to expose the result at the shareholders' meeting

でも、この上記のドタバタの状況、―― どっかで、見たことありませんか?

特に、私の年齢くらいの、中間管理職の方なら、頻繁に。

2015-04-29 今回も、渋滞には全く遭遇することなく、帰省を完了しました。

ITの世界では「ビッグデータ」という言葉が鬱陶しいくらいに出てくる昨今です。

These days, the word "big data" often enters the stage in the world of the IT.

しかし「ビッグデータ」云々の前に、私たちは「データ」すら使っていないと実感することが多いです。

However, before talking about "big data", I often realize that we do not use "data" itself.

さて、大型連休の初日、私は珍しく自動車で実家に戻りました。

By the way, first day of this long holidays, I came back to my country house by car unusually.

自宅から実家まではざっくり350km、高速道路の利用が前提となります。

今回も、渋滞には全く遭遇することなく、帰省を完了しました。

This time, I completed homecoming without traffic jam.

簡単な話です。

It is an easy story.

渋滞が発生する場所と時刻を「外せ」ば良いからです。

I can take off a place and the time when a traffic jam is generated.

もっとぶっちゃければ、「深夜に移動を開始する」「渋滞の発生時刻時にパーキングエリアで寝る」の2つの方針だけで足ります。

Frankly speaking, I have just two policies "I start movement in the middle of the night" and "I sleep in parking area at the outbreak time of the traffic jam"

事故が発生すれば、渋滞に突っ込むのではなく、パーキングエリアで車に持ち込んだノートPCで、録画しておいた番組を見ていれば、色々な意味で時間の有効活用になります。

If an accident occurs, I do not go into the traffic jam and watch the program which I recorded with the notebook PC which I brought into the car in parking area. I can use time effectively in various meanings.

しかし、『そんなことは分かっている』『時間の都合がつかないんだ』という方がほとんどでしょう。

2016-04-29 ―― ドタバタと走り回っていたのは私だけ

私は、配電・送電システムを、普通の人より理解していると思っているので、停電が起こると、ちょっとしたパニックになります。

Hearing my shout "Get ready for the coming S-wave !", my wife and daughter was having a piece of toast with ease.

家長だけが、一人で狼狽え(うろたえ)ている、みっともない時間でした。

It was helpful time that only a head of family became panic.

(近くの雑木林の、ボヤ火災が原因だったようです)

2017-04-29 手を抜くんじゃねえ(→ちゃんと裁判所を通して令状取れ)

以前、「(裁判所の礼状なく)警察が被疑者の車にGPSをつけて尾行を行ったこと」に対する違法性を争う判決(下級審)で、

―― 「重大な違法性はない」

The court has made a ruling that "there is no serious illegality"

という判決が出たことに対して、

と思っていたからです。

この他、ちょっと興味深かったのは「補足意見」(15人中の2名)の方にありまして、

This Supreme Court ruling was common interpretation, based on the penal code law principle. So I did not understand why the opinion was divided by the lower court.

大阪地裁は、広島地裁は「違法性なし」、名古屋地裁は「違法性あり」という判断でした。

Both Osaka and Hiroshima District Court said "no illegality", on the other hand, Nagoya District Court judged said "illegality".

大阪と広島というと ―― (私の中では)暴力団のイメージが強いです。

Osaka and Hiroshima has a image of gangsters in my mind.

もしかしたら、地域性が判決に影響を与えているのかなー

とか、ボンヤリと考えたりしていました。

でも、下の2つ(オフィス編)は本当です。

2019-04-29 ―― 当初の予定通り動いたモノだけが正解であり、動かすことができた人間だけが正義

思想家や哲学者の名前くらいしか知らない私にとっては、それを判断する材料がありません。

For me who only knows the names of thinkers and philosophers, there is no way how to judge true or false.

相手を論破するには、その思想家や哲学者の原書について、徹底的に学習しなければなりません。

In order to refute the opponent, I must thoroughly learn about the original book of the thinker and philosopher.

が、そもそも、私は、そういうものには興味がありませんでした。

But in the first place, I was not interested in such things.

それに、その当時から、

Besides, from that time,

―― 社会を良くしようと志向する者(哲学者)が、大衆に理解できない本を書いてどうする

と思っていましたし、

"How does a person (philosopher) who intends to improve society write a book that the public can not understand?"

「そういうスタンスの哲学者の著書など、私が苦労して理解してやる必要はない」とさえ思っていました。

I thought "I don't have to work hard to understand such a philosopher's book on such a stance,"

そこに行くと、技術(特に工学)の世界は、明快です。

On the other hand, the world of technology (especially engineering) is clear.

という絶対的な価値基準があります。

This is an absolute value standard.

ですから、どんなに偉そうに技術を語ろうとも、(少くとも私は)、モノを動かせない人間は、1mmも信用しません。

So, no matter how well they speak technology, at least I can not trust anyone who can not move things.

特にコンセプトだけ語って、パワーポイントを量産するだけの奴は、私の記憶の中には残りません ―― で、人工知能技術の分野で、こういう手合いが多い。

Especially, a person who speak a concept only and mass-produce the power point, is out of my scope. there are many such people in the field of artificial intelligence technology.

私は、100枚のパワーポイントを量産する人間より、自分の手で100行の動くプログラムを書く人間を、信用します。

I trust people who write 100-line executive programs with their own hands, rather than those who mass-produce 100 power points.

実際にモノを作る人の声は、有無を言わせぬ説得力があり、かつ、そのようにして作られたモノは、暴力的なまでに強い。

The voice of those who actually make things is very persuasive, and things that are made in this way are strong enough to be violent.

私は、その動くモノを見て、その中身を検証し、そのモノに込められた技術力に驚嘆するのです。

I look at the moving things, examine their contents, and marvel at the technological powers put into them.

もっとも、私は「コンセプト」を作る人間をバカにしている訳ではありません。

私、ティンーンエイジャの「プログラミング教育」というのに、もの凄い危機感を感じている一人です。

人気アニメの実写化は、たいていの場合、コケます。

私たちから見れば、「新型コロナウイルス SARS-CoV-2」は、人類に敵対する、最強にして最悪の憎むべき敵ではあります。

2022-04-29 ―― どうして、私(たち)は、連休に、こんなに過大な要求を自分に課せるのか?

この連休でやっておきたいことをメモに書き出してみたら、とんでもない数になりました。

2023-04-29 最近話題になっている「AIに絵を描いてもらう」を調べてみました。

先程、EE Times Japanの編集担当の方から、ご依頼を受けた内容のコラムを書き上げました。

I have just finished writing a column on a request from the editorial staff of EE Times Japan.

まあ、文章を書くのはいいです。図面の作成もできます。貰ったレビューを会話風に展開するのも、まあなんとかなっています。

Well, I can do writing. Drawings can be made. I can manage to develop the reviews I get into a conversational style.

問題はイラストです。

The problem is the illustration.

The time I spend on illustrations has become uncharacteristically long these days.

最近話題になっている「AIに絵を描いてもらう」を調べてみました。

I looked into the recent topic of "having an AI draw a picture".

YouTubeなどで調べてみたのですが、なんか違う。

I have looked it up on YouTube, etc., but it is something different.

私の場合、コラムの内容に一致させる絵が欲しいので、最初から、コンセプトも、欲しいキャラクターも、構図も、明解なのです。

In my case, I want a picture that matches the content of the column, so from the beginning, the concept, the characters I want, and the composition are clear.

美しい背景は不要ですし、各種の色彩効果もいりません。

There is no need for beautiful backgrounds or various color effects.

線画と色が乗っているだけのイラストでいいのです。

I feel like an idiot for having worked so hard to describe the system configuration diagram.

There is a crowdsourcing service online that will draw illustrations for you. Prices are generally reasonable.

そのサービスを提供してくれる人に、コラムの原稿と、自分の希望を出して、イラストを作ってもらうことができると思います。

I think you could ask the person who provides that service to create an illustration of my column, along with a draft of my column and my wishes.

However, I want to continue to make the illustrate of my columns with my own hands.
